‘New Barcelona Declaration’ at Science|Business conference calls for more EU climate action

The new ‘Mission Innovation’ to boost energy R&D announced in Paris is good - but the EU isn’t formally a part of it and more needs to be done at the collective, European level. The Barcelona Climate Declaration, launched Nov. 20 at ESADE Business School by the Science|Business Network of universities and companies, calls for a doubling of EU R&D funding in this area as part of a broad, research and innovation-based action plan against climate change.

Leading research universities around the world are becoming powerful engines of innovation. The most successful institutions generate tens or even hundreds of millions of euros in annual income from collaboration with industry, patents, licensing and spin-offs. Much of that income is channelled back to researchers, creating a virtuous circle for the university. CERN: Upgraded nuclear physics facility starts up

Over the last few weeks, CERN's nuclear physics facility, ISOLDE, has been producing ion beams at higher energies. The first cryomodule of the new HIE-ISOLDE (High-Intensity and Energy ISOLDE) accelerator is up and running, increasing the beam energy from 3 to 4.3 MeV per nucleon.
