Soil erosion is reducing agricultural productivity and increasing the amount of water needed to irrigate crops. And climate change is exacerbating the problem.

It is estimated that between 60 and 70% of EU soils are unhealthy. Soil is a fragile resource that needs to be carefully managed. One centimetre of soil can take hundreds of years to form, but can be washed away in a single rainstorm.

The EU Horizon Europe Mission on soils aims to address this, establishing 100 living labs and ‘lighthouse’ projects across member states to generate insights, test solutions and demonstrate their value in real-life conditions, with the aim of restoring soils by 2030.

This is not the first time the EU has stepped in to support soil conservation and remediation.
