Report shows some progress in integrating social sciences and humanities in Horizon Europe, but measuring impact is more challenging

The integration of researchers from the social sciences and humanities (SSH) in Horizon Europe is progressing, but policymakers still have no clear picture of their contribution to collaborative projects.
Between 2021 and 2023, some 40% of collaborative Pillar 2 topics were SSH-flagged, meaning the integration of SSH research was considered to be highly relevant to achieving the topic’s objectives, according to the European Commission’s first monitoring report. These topics received 41% of the total Pillar 2 budget, up from 33% in Horizon 2020.
Within SSH-flagged topics, 88% of projects had at least one SSH partner, and 22% of all partners across these topics represented SSH fields. However, the evaluation did not measure the ways…
