EMBL is Europe’s life sciences laboratory – with 29 member states, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) has more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology at six sites in Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Heidelberg, EMBL-EBI Hinxton, and Rome.
Governance
The International Relations Team is a central unit responsible for strategically managing relations with EMBL member states and other major government and political stakeholders, including the European Commission and EIROforum. The Team, led by the Chief of International Relations, also coordinates EMBL’s involvement in several ESFRI projects, and works with partners in other International Research Organizations to build broad alliances and coalitions in support of science and the scientific endeavor.
We are seeking a trainee to join our team at EMBL Heidelberg who will be responsible for providing support to all team members across various topics.
Please note that this is a training position, suitable for someone with who finalized their Master’s studies and is looking to gain experience in international relations in the environment of an intergovernmental organisation. EMBL cannot provide any study credits for this traineeship.
Your role
- Research and analyses of political and science policy developments in EMBL member states, at the EU level, and globally;
- Support in organisation of external and internal meetings and high-level events;
- Drafting correspondence, preparing briefings and presentations for IR team members and EMBL leadership;
- Compiling meeting summaries, reports, and memos;
- Support the International Relations Team in the implementation of any other relevant tasks.
This is a six-month position with the possibility for an extension of further six months on mutual agreement. The position is based at EMBL’s site in Heidelberg, Germany. The position comes with a stipend of 700 EUR and accommodation provided if needed.
You have
- Excellent research and writing skills, with full proficiency in English (spoken and written) and one additional EMBL host country language. Proficiency in Spanish or French is especially desirable;
- Advanced organisation skills and attention to detail, ability to prioritise and meet deadlines;
- Developed communication skills, including a diplomatic attitude;
- Teamwork and demonstrated interpersonal skills, including an ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in an international environment;
- An ideal candidate would be confident in using Microsoft Office suite and internet search engines, ideally also familiar with Google collaborative tools, Slack and Zoom.
You might also have
- An educational background in International Relations, European Studies, International Law or a similar discipline.

Shortlisted candidates will be requested to submit a short written task prior to a panel interview. Those successfully completing the panel interview will be invited to a one-on-one interview with the hiring manager.
This is a paid traineeship with monthly remuneration of 700 EUR.
