Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna (UNIBO)

Founded in 1088, Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna is widely recognized as the oldest university in the western world, its history intertwined with the great names of science and literature. Today, the University of Bologna is a keystone and reference point for European culture, pairing its traditions with innovative research and teaching.

The medieval roots of the Alma Mater continue to provide the foundations for the constant renewal of the University, as well as the energy to drive experimentation and innovation. We strive to transmit knowledge, experiment with techniques and develop the ideas that will address the transformations of our time.

Building on centuries of history, and fuelled by an inexorable drive to innovate, the vocation of the University for education and research is rooted at the very heart of our life and autonomy. These pillars are accompanied by a third mission: the maintenance of dynamic relations and interactions with society as a whole and the world of work. Through five distinct campuses (Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna, Rimini), and a branch in Buenos Aires, we offer over 250 degree programmes – across 32 Departments and 11 Schools – to over 94,000 students. Some five thousand graduates are enrolled in our PhD and other third cycle programmes, and we rank first in Italy for academic reputation.

As a comprehensive research university, The University of Bologna invests in a multidisciplinary, cross-cultural approach and in the inseparable connection between research and teaching. We are one of the most active universities in EU research and academic cooperation, having coordinated or participated in over 600 projects under FP7 and Horizon 2020, worth over €230 million. Bologna has formed myriad knowledge alliances with industry and public/private organizations. It is a hub of international networks: beyond its close European links, it enjoys multiple connections with America, Africa, Asia and Australia. And in the 2021 edition of the QS World University Rankings, Bologna has climbed to position 160, reflecting our continuous pursuit of scientific excellence and global perspectives.
