January 2025 kicked off with a transition agreement between the European Union and South Korea, enabling the nation to officially participate in the EU’s Horizon Europe research programme as an associated member.
Under the terms of this agreement, Korean researchers can now apply to most Pillar 2 projects on the same terms as their European counterparts. Negotiations on Korea’s association to Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe started in May 2023 and a formal deal to finalise the process is expected this year.
