Commission study finds manufacturing and Europe’s richest regions benefit most from EU research and innovation funding

Horizon Europe’s impact on Europe’s economy is significant but unevenly spread around its regions and industries, a study by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre has found.
Analysing the impact of Horizon Europe’s first four years, from 2021 to 2024, the analysts found the research programme had already generated almost one euro extra in GDP for every euro spent, with the number set to grow in the coming years as more innovations hit the market.
Most of the impact of Horizon Europe is felt in the business sector, where it made up 68.5% of the overall positive impact on Europe’s GDP in 2023, followed by higher education at 28.1%.
