The country’s researchers now have free access to Pillar 2 of the programme. Digital, industry and space projects dominate, but that could change
South Korean academics now have near-full access to the big collaborative grants of Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe, after a transition agreement kicked in last week.
Seoul and Brussels agreed a deal in principle last March to allow South Korea to associate to Pillar 2, the more industrially-focused part of the EU’s research and innovation programme.
The European Commission wants to expand the programme beyond Europe, while South Korea hope to internationalise its sometimes insular research system.
The formal deal to associate hasn’t yet been inked, although signatures are expected this year.
