King's College London: Policy pitching competition launched

12 Nov 2014 | Network Updates
Policy Idol is an exciting new pitching competition launched today by The Policy Institute at King's.

The competition, which is open to current staff and students at King’s, provides a great opportunity to pitch your policy ideas to an elite panel of leading figures from the worlds of government, academia and industry.

Competitors will have just three minutes to pitch their ideas, either in teams or individually, to the judges, who will be assessing both style and substance. Three prizes are available: the student runner-up and staff runner-up will receive £500 and the overall winner, the Policy Idol 2015, will receive £1,000.

Professor Jonathan Grant, Director of the Policy Institute, said, ‘Policy Idol is a really exciting competition that is all about communicating beyond academia. You may have a great idea, but if you can’t present it in a clear and concise way, no one will hear. Policy Idol encourages people to think about how they structure and sell their ideas in order to maximise the difference their research makes to society.’

The Policy Institute will be running heats across all campuses at King’s early in 2015. Those selected to progress to the final will be provided with bespoke training in communications and policy analysis.  As in the heats, the judges will award marks on style and substance, but competitors will also have to convince a live audience who will be able to vote on the night.  Policy Idol is supported by King’s ESRC Impact Acceleration Acount.

The closing date for applications is Friday 12 December 2014. For more information about the competition, and details on how to enter, visit www.kcl.ac.uk/policyidol.
