Horizon Europe’s €2 billion public-private partnership on bio-based industries in numbers

Southern European countries are leading the way in Horizon Europe projects for bio-based industries, funded together with industry through the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU).
With €538 million spent by the partnership so far, Spain leads the grantee rankings with €95 million in funding, or 18% of the total, followed by Italy with €74 million, or 14%.
The two southern states are far ahead of the next in line, France and Belgium, which have secured around €50 million in funding each.
Italy is home to the partnership’s biggest beneficiary, Novamont, a company developing biodegradable and compostable bioplastics. It has so far received €24 million in funding for 14 projects, including a €16 million flagship demonstrating the effectiveness of biobased solutions in the packaging sector.
