Professor Gary Marquis, D.Sc. (Tech.) has been appointed Dean of the Aalto University School of Engineering for five years starting on 1st July, 2013. Marquis is to follow Petri Varsta, who will retire 30th June 2013.
Gary Marquis (born 1957) is currently Professor of Mechanics of Materials at the Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Applied Mechanics.
Marquis has worked actively both in international and Finnish scientific communities. He moved to Finland in 1988 after working as a Research Fellow at the Silesian Technical University in Poland. He has worked at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland as a Research Scientist and Senior Research Scientist and as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the USA.
In 2001 he started as a Professor of Steel Structures at the Lappeenranta University of Technology before he was appointed Professor of Mechanics of Materials at the Helsinki University of Technology in 2008. Gary Marquis has also worked as a visiting professor at the Kyushu University in Japan and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland and is currently an affiliated professor at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. Gary Marquis is a member of the Board of Directors of The International Institute of Welding (IIW) and is the long-serving chair of the IIW commission on fatigue.

As an example, the School of Engineering has been preparing the school’s strategic roadmap in order to set direction for the years to come. The dean of the Aalto University School of Engineering is responsible for directing the school’s activities in accordance with the strategy of the university and to take part in the long-term development of Aalto University as a member of its management team.
The dean is responsible for the overall development and international competitiveness of the school, for its resource allocation within the framework of the operating plan and budget of the university and for recruiting faculty in accordance with the tenure track policies of Aalto University.
