We have had a soft spot for solid-state lighting ever since someone gave us an everlasting torch/flashlamp with a light-emitting diode (LED). It stopped working after a couple of years.

Some say that LEDs will save the planet from climate change by slashing the amount of energy that goes into lighting. After sitting on its hands for some time, while Japan and the USA throw money into new lighting technologies, the UK is coming out of the dark ages. The Department of Trade and Industry is even seeking input.

You've missed this event, reported by LEDS Magazine, we did too. But that shouldn't stop anyone with an interest from chipping in.
