Universities rake it in from the US Department of Defense

07 Mar 2006 | News

We've just caught up with the news of the $150.6 million that the US the Department of Defense (DoD) will hand out over the next five years to 20 universities to do 30 projects. The money, an average of about $1 million for each award, comes through the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI).

Most of the projects in the list have clear military implications – "Image Understanding for Persistent Surveillance," for example, or "Effects of Implosion on Surrounding Structures". But others will have a broader impact. Take the two projects on "Silicon-Based Lasers and Nanophotonics" and "Ultrafast Switching for Optical Imaging".

We aren't quite sure what to make of the fact that each project has both a MURI title and a project titles. So "Dynamic, Adaptive Techniques for Adversary Behavior Modeling" becomes "Cognitive Architecture for Reasoning About Adversaries".
