Dresden's big budget for small science

23 Apr 2006 | News
Big money is going into Europe's nanotechnology. This one has an interesting partnership between research and industry.

The EU is to hand out €232 million to the Fraunhofer-Center Nanoelectronic Technologies (CNT) in Dresden for "developing new process technologies for nanoelectronics". Of this loot, €48 million comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) "for plant and equipment for the initial phase of the CNT".

The interesting bit here is that while the CNT is a Fraunhofer venture, it has its facilities on Infineon's research and manufacturing site in Dresden, which has become something of an electronic hotspot. AMD is also a partner in the venture.

"Dresden's ambition," the press release tells us, "is to become the third European center of advanced research in nanoelectronics, alongside LETI in Grenoble, France, and IMEC in Leuven, Belgium."
