The University of Manchester is launching a £10 million research centre for developing sustainable energy technologies.

The University of Manchester is launching a £10 million research centre for developing sustainable energy technologies.

The first five years of funding for the Joule Centre for Energy Research will be covered by the Northwest Regional Development Agency - "after which the centre hopes to become self-sufficient and will look for external partners for commercialisation", said a university spokesman.

The centre will focus on renewable energy research including wave, tidal and hydro technologies, as well as developing energy-efficiency methods for the home and industry.  It will provide a focal point for energy research between universities and industry and will support the work of the Northwest Energy Council, said a statement.

The centre has provided three research grants totalling over £600,000 investigating wave power; the tidal power of the Irish sea; and developing a hydro resource model.  The centre aims to support and increase energy research activities in the northwest to address climate change issues by providing sustainable energy alternatives.
