The EU has made energy research a high priority, aligning its efforts with three key objectives: decarbonisation; energy security; and the reduction of consumption while ensuring energy remains accessible and affordable. These aims directly support the goals of the European Green Deal, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
The EU supports energy research through funding programmes including Horizon Europe, the Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (Life), the European Regional Development Fund, the European Investment Bank and the Just Transition Mechanism, which is part of the European Green Deal.
