Seeds of success for Chinese students

Start up funds for PhD students in China.

Another sign of the times appears in a note from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. With the title "Ph.D grads receive start-up funds at CAS," it tells us that "In 2006, CAS has earmarked 18 million yuan as seed money for outstanding Ph.D graduates newly recruited by the Academy to launch their research".

From that, and the title, it isn't all that clear what the money is for. Here's what they say about the scheme: "To foster innovative personnel remains a crucial commitment for CAS, while the key issue is to retain talents in order to add catalysts for innovation. With this intention, CAS has designed a special fund since 2005 for backing up talented innovators to start their independent research careers."
