UPMC is the 7th university ranked among the most innovative in Europe according to Reuters. It is also the top French university in this ranking and has risen seven places since to 2016.

The Reuters ranking of the most innovative European universities identifies and classifies public institutions that advance science, invent new technologies and help stimulate the global economy. The top 25 public organizations listed are ranked according to 10 criteria, including the total number of publications listed, the percentage of publications including at least one co-author associated with a private entity, the volume of patents registered with the WIPO, success rate of patent requests, the percentage of patent filing covering the United States, Europe and Japan, and the rate of patent citation.
