At the end of March, the European Space Agency (ESA) unveiled its 2040 strategy. Among its core objectives is the enhancement of space capabilities to combat climate change and foster sustainability in space operations.
According to Heriberto Saldivar, ESA’s head of strategy, this environmental focus is crucial in understanding how the strategy reflects European values. “We want to do space the European way,” he told Science|Business. “That means doing it sustainably, working with our partners, respecting our planet, and ensuring that whatever we launch does not pollute or worsen life in the future.”
This approach extends to space itself, where one of the strategy's key goals is to keep the orbital environment free from debris and pollution. <…
