A stark north-south divide can be seen in a mid-term review of Italy’s performance in the EU’s current research Framework Programme

The distribution of Horizon Europe funding across Italian regions between 2021 and 2024 reveals a significant imbalance between the north and south of the country, according to a recent report from the Italian Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE) in Brussels.
APRE’s mid-term evaluation of Italy’s performance in Horizon Europe shows that nearly 50% of funding secured by the country was concentrated in the regions of Lazio and Lombardy, which together received approximately €1.7 billion, covering 4,087 project participations.
