Public and nonprofit funding for research into alternative proteins that have the potential to meet the increasing demand for meat whilst making the food system more sustainable, is growing at pace in Europe, with an average increase of 70% each year since 2020.
This will see funding for research into environmentally friendly substitutes for conventional meat reach record levels in 2024. But to deliver on this investment more collaboration is needed, according to a report on the state of the research ecosystem by nonprofit think tank the Good Food Institute (GFI).
