Germany’s academic exchange service cuts 13 programmes to control rising personnel, IT and rental costs

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is axing 13 programmes, including seven international research schemes, to compensate for rising operational costs. 

"We are confronted with sharply rising costs in Germany and worldwide, such as personnel, IT and rental costs,” said Joybrato Mukherjee, president of the DAAD, Germany’s support service for international academic cooperation. “These cost increases require well thought-out and effective measures in order to remain viable in our central funding areas of scholarships and university cooperation.”

As part of its “consolidation” measures, the DAAD will axe seven international funding programmes, including two programmes for students and academics affected by the war in Ukraine, research cooperation with Pakistan, university partnerships with Greece, and broader programmes such as funding for conferences abroad.
