Former EU research chief Máire Geoghegan-Quinn has joined the advisory board of RAND Europe, the Cambridge- and Brussels-based research firm announced on Wednesday.

Geoghegan-Quinn, along with Florian von Heintze, deputy editor in chief of German newspaper BILD, joins a board that already includes another former Commissioner, László Andor, and former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt.

A part of the US-based RAND Corporation, RAND Europe carries out studies for clients including European governments and EU institutions, charities, foundations and universities.

Geoghegan-Quinn has largely stayed out of the political spotlight since her term as commissioner came to an end in 2014, although in 2015 she was picked to head a review on gender equality in Irish higher education.

Before becoming R&D commissioner in 2010, Geoghegan-Quinn was a member of the European Court of Auditors and a member of the Irish Parliament for 22 years, serving in a number of ministries in the 1980s and 1990s.
