Some US scientists in Europe have now decided to stay, citing the repressive political climate back home

A freeze on funds for some Fulbright scholars and a mass furlough of scholarship administrators is pushing some American scientists to stay in Europe, and making Europeans fearful for their upcoming trips to the US.
It’s the latest hit to transatlantic research links under the new administration of Donald Trump. One American Fulbright scholar told Science|Business they would remain in Germany to continue their research on cancer biology, fearful of a more hostile political environment back home.
“It’s a big conversation in the current grantees whether or not to return [to the US],” said Sky Chacon, who had planned to return home to continue their research career, but is now applying for PhD programmes at the Charité research hospital in Berlin.
