The University of Luxembourg intends to appoint a new President. This person will be committed to its mission, an accomplished strategic thinker and communicator, and an infectious optimist about the future of the University.
Founded in 2003, the University of Luxembourg is the first and only university of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Multilingual and international, it is a modern institution with a friendly atmosphere. The primary focus of the University is research and the bulk of the degrees offered are at masters and doctoral level. It undertakes work in a broad range of disciplines and was ranked joint first for its international outlook in the THE World University Rankings 2016 and this is reflected in the composition of both staff and student bodies.
The University has three academic faculties devoted to first-rate teaching and research: the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication; the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance; and the Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education. It also has three interdisciplinary centres, which foster research excellence and knowledge transfer: the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust, the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine and the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History.
The President of the University of Luxembourg, as its Chief Executive, will play a significant role in the continued growth of the Institution. The University’s new head will consolidate the successful achievements of the first decade and extend the activities in selected areas. Its administrative centre and much of its work is based in the Belval quarter; the creative regeneration of this industrial site makes for a stimulating learning environment and is a metaphor for the University’s innovative power.
The President will be a unifying leader internally, heading a dedicated team, and a powerful advocate externally. The successful candidate for this role will be an academic of international stature, with extensive leadership experience in research-led higher education institutions. He or she will have confirmed proficiency in English and French.
The President will model the character of the University: cosmopolitan, committed to excellence, and clear-sighted. He or she will possess a strong personal research track record and this will be combined with experience of successful management of complex academic organisations. A gifted communicator, the President will be able to engage effectively with a wide variety of audiences, both academic and non-academic, and will relish the leadership role played by the University in Luxembourg’s cultural and social life.
