Frank Gielen appointed to boost digital learning and links in sustainable energy

InnoEnergy, the European innovation engine for sustainable energy, has appointed Frank Gielen as Education Director to strengthen the company’s education programmes – including its Master’s School and PhD School– through blended and digital learning and boosting links with industry.

Based in Brussels, Gielen joins InnoEnergy from his position as Head of EIT Digital’s Professional School. Gielen also brings extensive software expertise from his senior role at iMinds, the Flanders digital incubator and business accelerator to support the digitalisation of learning.

Gielen will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of InnoEnergy’s education proposition including its Master’s School and executive education initiatives. By combining entrepreneurship and innovation into scalable digital and blended learning courses, InnoEnergy aims to encourage the development and adoption of sustainable energy technologies in Europe.

Diego Pavia, InnoEnergy CEO, says: “It’s a real coup to have someone of Frank's calibre leading our education initiatives. His vision and passion for the future of higher education will help to boost the unique combination of entrepreneurship, innovation and business content our students receive.

“As InnoEnergy continues to work towards reducing energy bills, lowering carbon dioxide emissions and enhancing energy security through our innovators, it will be crucial to have the right talent and technologies across the sector to make this a reality.”

Gielen adds: “I’m thrilled to play a part in realising Europe’s sustainable energy future. My vision is to increase technology adoption in Europe by cementing the link between industry and higher education through digital and blended learning. This means we can deliver what industry needs while ensuring energy organisations have the best talent in place to be more competitive globally.”

InnoEnergy recently launched its new ‘Call for professional digital learning’ to search for course ideas such as massive open online courses (MOOCS) or small private online courses (SPOCs) in sustainable energy related to entrepreneurship, innovation and business.
