ACES: GridON's Fault Current Limiter has been officially pronounced commercial

02 Oct 2013 | Network Updates

GridON's Fault Current Limiter has been officially pronounced commercial after completing nearly 6 months of service in a live substation. The FCL suppresses damaging fault currents - hence enabling reliable connection of additional generators and distributed renewable energy sources to existing transmission and distribution networks - without costly network upgrades.

Network planners and operators have been visiting the live installation and are currently evaluating possible applications for their distribution and transmission grids.  UK Power Networks will be glad to host additional visitors in their substation, south of London, and to share their positive experience.

GridON's FCL incorporates standard transformer technology and is scalable to very high voltage and power ratings.  The product is very robust, reliable, easy to install and operate, and requires minimal (transformer-like) maintenance.  Installing GridON's FCLs could cut capital expenditure by tens to hundreds of millions of dollars per customer, and extend the useful life of existing network assets.
