A new awards scheme has been launched to assist start up companies who are struggling to access materials, research and knowledge. Individual Awards of up to £5000 are available for UK based companies. The research work must be carried out by or in collaboration with one of the University partners, and a fundamental requirement for such an award is that projects reach completion within 4 months from the start date of the project.
Based on the strength of research excellence in advanced materials, University of Bath (through Bath Ventures), along with the University of Glasgow and the University of Sheffield, have funding available to address the barriers associated with commercialising research outcomes.
The SPARK Awards are managed by the Materials Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) to support strategic projects in accessing research and knowledge.
They are targeted towards companies, particularly SMEs, looking to access research to improve their industrial performance.
Sean Smith of Bath Ventures said: “This new award scheme will allow SMEs here in the South West to compete for funding to develop problem solving proof-of-concept technology demonstration and other development activities involving materials.
“We are looking for companies who would like to work with the University of Bath for the first time to undertake initial technology based projects.”
Sean adds: “While applicants aren’t expected to meet every single criteria, priority will be given to projects that promise rapid results once the work is completed, will be of high future value to the company, have the potential to generate significant future collaborations, develop innovative products or technologies, and will deliver value back into the UK materials community.”
The deadline for the 2011 SPARK Awards is 5pm on Friday 17 June. Applicants will be informed of the outcome on Friday 8 July and projects will be started by 3 October 2011.
