Prize start ups walk away with EU cash

Three small business with a collective staff of less than 60 get to share €600,000 of EU cash

This year's winners of the European Information Society Technology Grand Prize might be worth looking at for investment ideas. Each takes home €200,000. Another 17 collected €5000 each.

We were particularly taken by the work of the National Institute of Research and Development for Earth Physics (NIEP) in Roumania. They pick up their award for "A device for shutting down of the dangerous industrial processes before strong earthquakes arrives."

Doubtless someone will try to make something of the geographical spread of the winners. Nothing odd with France, Germany and the United Kingdom collecting three each. But Spain, which also collected three awards, doesn't feature all that high in the R&D league tables, like those cooked up by the OECD.
