Companies start to soccer it to us

Could this be the only time you read about the World Cup at Science|Business?

It had to happen, companies have started to proclaim their technology smarts by hitching a ride on  World Cup mania. Siemens could not resist the temptation with its proclamation that "It would take several pages just to list all the individual projects that Siemens has implemented over the past few years in the twelve cities and twelve stadiums of this year’s World Cup."

The company has done lots of transport stuff to get people to the venues where it will all happen. It even did its bit with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tickets, touted as a way to shorten queues rather than a move against counterfeit tickets.

It would be nice to think that this is the last time we will read this sort of thing, but somehow we don't think so. What's worse, in the UK at least we can expect six years of this sort of thing as they get ready for the Olympics.
