An international partnership has started to build a large-scale public infrastructure for sharing research information across Europe.

The Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research (DRIVER) project aims to make content ranging from scientific/technical reports, research articles, experimental or observational data, videos, etc., freely accessible through an Internet-based network.

The project is modelled on GEANT2, the European network for computing resources, data storage and transport. It is funded by the European Commission under the auspices of the Research Infrastructure unit.

The project is a collaboration between ten university partners. Over the next 18 months they will build upon existing databases and networks in countries including the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium and the UK. The aim is to create a single user interface for accessing all the individual databases.

Several user services, including search, data collection and profiling will be implemented in the prototype system. It is hoped that creating a basic content infrastructure will encourage academic and other service providers to build high-valued and innovative services on top of it.
