Glasgow imaging system distinguishes live heart muscle from dead

Computer scientists at Glasgow University, working in collaboration with cardiologists at the city’s Western Infirmary have developed an imaging system for revealing the internal motion of heart tissue, making it possible to distinguish between live muscle tissue and areas of dead and variable tissue.

This allows cardiologists to determine tissue that has some wall motion abnormality but could be viable after revascularisation techniques such as coronary artery bypass graft.

The key benefits of this technology include the speed of assessment because it offers a fast method of detecting reversible myocardial infarct or myocardial viability.

The system also improves the accuracy of diagnosis of reversible myocardial infarcts and enables other effects of a heart attack to be studied, for example, infarct muscle motion during systole can be monitored. In addition, the-technique is can be used with pre-existing MRI images.

The IP associated with the technology belongs to the University of Glasgow and is available for non-exclusive licence.
