System for compressing microscopy image files

09 Jan 2007 | News

Scientists at Glasgow University have developed and image compression system that can compress multiple microscopy images into a single file. This gives the ability to store, access and transmit for display, complete stacks of images much faster than existing methods. The significant reduction in storage space requirements allows larger image archives to be held on-line and reduces storage costs.

Using this tool, the storage requirements for microscopy stacks are reduced in the order of one hundred to one and the compressed archives are visually indistinguishable from the originals.

The scientists have built a demonstrator of the system, which runs on Microsoft Windows. It can be accessed at their website for a trial/evaluation of the software, which is available to license.

The project was supported by Scottish Enterprise's Proof of Concept Fund, which funds researchers to take basic research projects and develop them to the point where they are ready for licensing or commercialisation.
