The Swedish Research Council is investing €8.5 million in a new molecular medicine laboratory at Umeå University, focusing on infectious diseases. The ultimate objective is for Umeå to become a Swedish node in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL.

The decision to invest in Umea followed a review of the applications by an international panel. The aim of this initiative is to strengthen Swedish research in the field and increase career opportunities for young scientists. Umeå University itself will put Euros 10 million into the lab over the next three years.
