Karolinska Institutet (KI), one of Europe’s leading medical universities, is planning a coordinated effort to increase strategic alliances with corporate partners in the biopharma industry.

A blueprint for the development plan of the Strategy and Development Office (SDO) at KI, published on the KI Web site 2 February, includes the creation of a Corporate Affiliates Network of leading companies for knowledge transfer and strategic alliances. Through the network KI would guide companies to finding the most appropriate researchers and technologies.

“We would like to enter into a number of umbrella agreements with selected companies, said Maria Anvret, director of the university’s Strategy and Development Office, in an interview.  “We are now identifying those companies through industry and market analysis. At the same time, she said, the office aims to guide researchers at KI in finding the best development partners under the most favourable terms.

SDO was reorganized last year to push for expanded development of strategic partnerships around the world, and currently has a staff of 14. Anvret, its director, was formerly with pharmaceutical maker AstraZeneca.
