A new cleantech fund, Emerald Technology Ventures, has been launched following the management buyout of Zurich-based SAM Private Equity’s independent venture capital division.

Emerald will be managing three venture capital funds worth over Euros 250 million from its offices in Zurich, Switzerland and Montreal, Canada. Founded in 2000, Emerald is one of the pioneer investors in the emerging clean technology sector, with a focus on energy, materials and water technologies.

The firm currently manages a portfolio of 27 companies across Europe and North America, and has backed companies including Nasdaq-quoted Evergreen Solar; Pemeas, which was acquired subsequently by the German chemicals giant BASF; and Schmack Biogas.

Gina Domanig, Managing Partner said, “With the closing of our newest fund, Emerald Technology Ventures II, we will continue to be one of the most active global investors in clean technology venture capital.”
