Funding programme launched

The UK charity Help the Aged said it is to fund 20 new studies across the UK through its biomedical Research into Ageing programme.  The studies, costing £1.7 million in total, will research treatments for conditions related to older age including dementia, wound healing, and osteoporosis.

Lorna Layward, Research Manager at Help the Aged, said research into health conditions like incontinence and poor mobility that are hugely debilitating to millions of older people is “scandalously” under-funded.  “Thankfully the public are signalling their support for more research into these and many other conditions by donating to the Help the Aged biomedical Research into Ageing programme.”

The charity is currently able only to fund around 20 per cent of the projects that seek its support, and is looking for new donations to enable it to increase its investment in research to £5 million per year by 2010.
