Four French institutes, including the École Polytechnique, joined with French insurer AXA and other financial firms to create a €6 million foundation to study risk management.

The financial firms will initially contribute €1 million towards a total fund of €6 million, but the Foundation is open to more research bodies and further industrial sector investment, according to a news release from the new organization, called la Fondation du Risque. The academic partners are the School of Economics, Statistics, Finance and Insurance (ENSAE), the University of Paris-Dauphine, the Centre for Actuarial Studies (CEA) and the École Polytechnique. The industry partners are insurers AXA, Assurances Générales de France (AGF), and Groupama, and bank Société Générale in association with the reinsurance group SCOR, with the aim of promoting risk research and education in France.

The Foundation will fund an international centre in France to:

  • Study the scientific, statistical, economic, legal and social aspects of any type of risk.

  • Promote rational assessment of risks and their impacts

  • Develop interdisciplinary exchange on risk management among academics and professionals
  • Contribute to risk prevention and risk management policies at micro and macroeconomic levels
  • Develop risk education by providing members, public and private decision-makers and the general public with a deeper understanding of risk mechanisms

In order to raise public awareness, the centre will disseminate information through international conferences, seminars, publication of a Risk Foundation Review and creation of an information-based website.  It will also create links with social partners, relevant non-governmental organizations and consumer organizations.
