Researchers at Strathclyde University in the UK have shown that galegine, a natural product from the plant Galega officinalis can reduce body weight in normal and obese mice.
Galegine is orally active, causing a marked and long-lasting reduction in body weight, as well as a lowering of blood glucose levels. The researchers have synthesised a number of galegine derivatives, and these have been shown to have similar weight-reducing effects upon oral administration.
Studies of the mode of action suggest that galegine and active analogues act directly on fat metabolism by activating AMP-activated protein kinase. Independent in vitro toxicity testing of the active analogues raised no concerns about possible mutagenicity, cytotoxicity or non-specific pharmacological effects.
The researchers believe the compounds could be used in anti-obesity drugs and in the treatment of Type II diabetes. The technology has US patent protection.
