The European Commission has told Hungary to change tax laws which limit R&D tax exemptions to research carried out in the country.

Under Hungarian law, research performed on behalf of companies in public research institutions is treated more favourably than similar R&D activities performed on similar premises located in other EU Member States.

The Commission says that as a result, Hungarian companies and entrepreneurs are discouraged from carrying out R&D in other EU Member States. This therefore impedes the free provision of services. Hungary has two months to respond.
