South African scientists will gain access to European molecular biology research through the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) after the South African government signed a cooperation agreement, allowing scientists from the country to participate in EMBO programmes and activities.

The agreement will allow some EMBO activities to take place in South Africa. The cooperation enables South African scientists to take part in EMBO programmes, such as fellowships, courses and workshops and the Young Investigator Programme.

“Scientists the world over benefit from access to funding, the latest research information and networking with their colleagues,” said Hermann Bujard, EMBO Executive Director. “EMBO is delighted to welcome South African scientists to join our networks, which foster collaboration and information exchange.”

EMBO will sponsor one practical course or workshop, and one plenary lecture in South Africa each year, to encourage local participation and awareness. Up to three South African scientists will have the opportunity to interact with young European group leaders at EMBO Young Investigator meetings. The EMBO Life Sciences Mobility Portal will post information for reciprocal career development and funding opportunities between South Africa and Europe.
