Norwegian brain scientists win SEK 1m Fernström Foundation Prize

The Fernström Foundation Nordic Prize has been awarded to Professors Edvard and May-Britt Moser from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, for their research into how the brain determines spatial locations.

The researchers, who work at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience in Trondheim, will share the SEK 1 million (about €103,000) prize.

Over years of high-impact research, scientists in the Moser group have shown how internal maps are created in a part of the cerebral cortex called the entorhinal cortex. They have discovered a distinct class of nervous system cell, grid cells, which are essential for this process.

The prize is awarded by a foundation established by shipowner Erik K Fernström, which is based at the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University.
