Scientists at Trinity College Dublin have discovered a new immune system protein, which they say could form the basis of more effective vaccines.

The protein, named TAG, limits a key process in the body that is needed for vaccines to work, and the researchers say blocking its effect could boost the immune system’s response to infections such as HIV and malaria.

The work was carried out in collaboration with researchers the University of Massachussets and the University of Trondheim.
