Biomanufacturing, the use of biological systems to produce commercially valuable products, plays a strategic role in the EU’s competitiveness agenda. In January, the European Commission launched the Biotech and Biomanufacturing Initiative, aimed at helping start-ups and SMEs bring innovative biotechnology-based products to market.
“From advancing healthcare solutions to bio-based products in sectors such as chemicals, food, detergents, paper and pulp and textiles, biotech holds transformative potential for scaling up Europe’s industrial production and increasing prosperity,” said Stéphane Séjourné, the commissioner responsible for industrial strategy, on the eve of the launch.
In parallel with policy efforts such as the EU Pharmaceutical Strategy, the EU has also made substantial investments in biomanufacturing-related research and innovation, particularly through Horizon Europe.
