BioRegio wins Health Regions of the Future Competition

BioRegio Stern Management has won a €17 milliion grant from the German government for a centre of regenerative medicine.


BioRegio Stern Management GmbH has won the Gesundheitsregionen der Zukunft (Health Regions of the Future) competition, securing funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for a Centre for Regenerative Medicine to be set up in the Neckar-Alb and Stuttgart health region. The Ministry will provide around half of the total budget of almost €17 million.

The Health Regions of the Future competition promotes cooperation across medical research, development and health care within a specific region. “We are absolutely delighted that we have been chosen as one of the two most innovative health regions in Germany,” said the Managing Director of BioRegio Stern Klaus Eichenberg.

“In doing so, the [Ministry] is recognising that interdisciplinary cooperation that will pave the way for process and product innovations, which will benefit the entire healthcare system,” Eichenberg said. He added that the project will ensure that regenerative medicine becomes standard practice in patient care.

Around 30 partners in the Neckar-Alb and Stuttgart region will work in cooperation with the University Hospital Tübingen (UKT) to create a Patient’s Centre for Regenerative Medicine. It will focus on developing new treatment methods and on the provision of patient care. It will provide patients and doctors with information and advice on potential applications and forms of treatment.

Over the past few years, research institutions such as those in the UKT and various companies in the Stern BioRegion made progress in the field of regenerative medicine, including treating chronic wounds, musculoskeletal diseases and cardiovascular conditions.

BioRegio Stern Management GmbH is a skill-sharing network, providing a help and advice centre for founders of new businesses, entrepreneurs and researchers in the biotechnology sector in the region comprising Stuttgart, Tübingen, Esslingen, Reutlingen and Neckar-Alb in Germany.

The company promotes cooperation between such different disciplines as medicine, biochemical engineering, sensor technology, dietetics, biochemical analysis and bioinformatics. Key areas of focus are regeneration biology, medical technology and bioenergy.

It also represents the interests of founders of new businesses, entrepreneurs and researchers in dealings with government, the media and associations, coordinates marketing and provides advice for grant applications and corporate financing.
