Chalmers is in line to receive SEK 701 million (€65 million) over the next five years from a total fund of SEK 1.3 billion (€120 million) research fund that the Swedish government is devoting to strategically important research.

The Research Councils are recommending that Chalmers be awarded this funding for research in Energy, Materials Science, Nanoscience, Production and Transportation.

“The proposal means that Chalmers has been entrusted to develop research in several areas that are of crucial significance to the readjustment to a sustainable society,” said Karin Markides, President of Chalmers. “It is a sign of our solid position, scientifically strong support environments and the large number of excellent researchers we have in these areas. Funding for strategically significant research is the first step in reinforcing these areas even further. This will have a very tangible impact on society.”

One of the criteria in the selection process was the existence of companies or other bodies in Sweden that could benefit from the research.

“This has suited Chalmers well, as by tradition we have very close ties with Swedish industry and research institutes. In our close collaborations, research results are continuously used in applications and solutions that promote competitiveness,” Markides said.
