TU Dortmund is among the winners of the Bio.NRW competition staged by the North Rhine Westphalia Ministry of Innovation, taking €540,000 of a €843,000 project to develop new biocatalysis technologies. The research will be carried out jointly with the Jülich Research Centre.

Whole cell biocatalysis is an essential component in the development of industrial biotechnology. It can be applied for the production of complex and environmentally-friendly chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics and food ingredients.

The central aim of the biocatalysis technology platform is to optimise the use of microbial metabolism in the synthesis of fine chemicals. The technology platform will be integrated into the North-Rhine-Westphalian cluster for industrial biotechnology, CLIB2021. The cluster features prominent chemicals companies such as Bayer, Cognis, Evonik, Henkel and Lanxess, alongside small and medium-scale enterprises.
