The first UK government-backed innovation awards, the iawards, have been launched.

Entries for the 13 categories are open to organisations based anywhere, though there must be a specific UK involvement in any innovation.

Each entry must show how it meets one of the following criteria: addressing the healthcare needs of an ageing society; increasing security through measures ranging from tackling global poverty to minimising the threat of terrorism; preserving finite natural resources in the face of population growth and climate change; and delivery public services that make best use of new technologies.

Entries must also demonstrate that the innovation has an impact on the Grand Challenges for science.

Winners of the awards will be helped to meet potential business partners at industry events such as the Medica trade fair in Germany and TechnologyWorld in Coventry this autumn. They will also receive public relations support from the iawards team.

More information can be found on the iawards website: http://www.iawards.org.uk.
