Researcher Nere Garmendia, based in the Basque city of Donostia-San Sebastián, has developed a material for prostheses that she says will last more than 150 years, based on the ceramic material zirconia (Zr02), coated with carbon nanotubes. Current body prostheses do not last more than 10-15 years.

In a PhD thesis entitled, “Development of a new nanocompound material made of zirconia with coated carbon nanotubes, for orthopaedic applications”, Garmendia shows that the ageing and cracking of prostheses can be avoided with the new material.
