Warwick University spin-out Warwick Audio Technologies (WAT) has landed £1.5 million investment for the development of its flat flexible laminate loudspeaker technology. The money will enable the company to launch its first product this year.

WAT’s speakers are between 0.25 to 1mm thick, making them lightweight and flexible enough to fit into contoured spaces, such as car interiors where space is at a premium.

The investment was led by the public fund Finance Wales which has committed £600,000. The original investors, Porton Capital Inc. and Mercia Technology Fund are also investing. The company will establish an engineering and prototype manufacturing base in South Wales as part of the investment.

Warwick Audio Technologies’ CEO, Steve Couchman said, “Already we are having discussions with a range of potential partners representing leading brands, each of whom has seen a different, innovative end use for the product.
